Philip Laffer Royal Adelaide Wine Show Bursary
The Royal Adelaide Wine Show, established in 1871, is the most prestigious wine show in Australia, featuring over 2,500 wines from over 300 wineries across the country. Wines are judged by a panel of esteemed judges from across Australia over four days, to determine medal and trophy winners. The Royal Adelaide Wine Show Committee through the Royal Adelaide Show Society Foundation offers a Bursary program to support the South Australian Wine industry to continue to grow and prosper. The purpose of the funding is to support study pathways by providing a one-year $5,000 Bursary to a student undertaking either undergraduate or post graduate studies in the field of viticulture or oenology at an Australian university. The Philip Laffer Royal Adelaide Wine Show Bursary honours the contributions to the Society of Philip Laffer (AM). Philip maintained a passionate interest in education and research within the grape and wine sector throughout his career and continues his active involvement with the Society as an Honorary Councillor. This bursary reflects the importance that Philip and the Society places on creating pathways for further study and professional advancement.

2025 winner, Natalie Saywell
The Royal Adelaide Wine Show is proud to announce Natalie Saywell as the recipient of the 2025 Philip Laffer Royal Adelaide Wine Show Bursary.

Natalie, a first-year Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology student, recently relocated from New South Wales to pursue her studies and career aspirations in South Australia’s wine sector. Prior to commencing university, she gained valuable industry experience as a laboratory assistant with First Creek Wines, where her interest in the science of winemaking continued to grow.

During the selection process, Natalie impressed the panel with her thoughtful approach, maturity, passion for agricultural science, and clear vision for her future in the industry. The panel noted her strong understanding of winemaking as an applied agricultural science and her desire to contribute positively to the sector through innovation, education, and ongoing learning.

As the 2026 bursary recipient, Natalie will receive financial assistance to support her studies and living expenses while also participating in the Royal Adelaide Wine Show as a steward, gaining valuable exposure to the Australian wine judging process and industry networks.

"I initially became intrigued by this industry through hearing my dad talk about wine and the processes involved, from vine to wine. Over time, I realised those conversations had ignited a spark that was further fuelled by my passion for agricultural studies."
The Royal Adelaide Wine Show congratulates Natalie on her achievement and extends its thanks to all applicants who participated in the program. Their enthusiasm, dedication and commitment to the future of Australian wine provide great confidence in the next generation of industry leaders.
